Born and raised in Oakland Chinatown, the Gee Wong siblings, Nellie, Flo and Bill Wong, witnessed the rise of Chinatown and became an inspiration for their activism, creativity and visions for the future generation.

An enthusiast for chow, cinema, Asian soaps, and a kung fu artist wannabe, Nellie Wong hails longevity from her Oakland Chinatown roots to fighting for women, workers and immigrant rights. Her fifth poetry book, Nothing Like Freedom (HoongHoongLookLook Press, 2024) celebrates her 90th September.

Flo Oy Wong – artist/poet/educator – cofounded the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA). She is a recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts Award (NEA). In 2018, she published her Oakland Chinatown- focused art and poetry book, Dreams of Glistening Pomelos, a paean to her immigrant parents.

William Gee Wong parlayed his love of sports first played as a kid in Lincoln Square into a pioneering print journalism career that included a lifelong search for identity. This search culminated in Sons of Chinatown: A Memoir Rooted in China and America, which debuted at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center in March 2024.

The Community Engagement Partner Award
ARTogether
ARTogether Logo
ARTogether’s mission is to provide art programs that foster compassionate communities where refugees and immigrants can flourish.

ARTogether envisions a world where there are no barriers—or borders—to art and creative expression, where everyone is welcomed and their stories have impact.

Art plays a special role in the refugee community. For refugees and immigrants moving to the United States, the journey has just begun. ARTogether offers programs that reach out to refugees and immigrants, providing welcoming, creative spaces for local refugees and immigrants to connect with their community. ARTogether’s goal is to build communities and promote long-term prosperity for refugees and immigrants, even after assistance from initial government and NGO resettlement programs has ceased. For these programs, art is our social glue, its universality binding us all together. It invites conversation, laughter, storytelling and a sense of belonging. At the community level, it has a unique ability to bring people together, to draw together people from different backgrounds and forge connections through creativity and self-expression. Finally, art transcends the spoken word, allowing people to communicate and express themselves without the burden of language barriers.

Hālau O Keikiali’i
Hālau O Keikiali’i

Hālau O Keikiali’i‘s primary focus is on cultural traditions, including hula kahiko (ancient dance), hula `auana (modern dance), oli (chant), mele (traditional songs), himeni (modern songs), nā mea hula (arts, crafts, implements), lole hula (hula attire), ‘ōlelo (language), and mo’olelo (stories).

Following tradition, they share what they learn with different communities so that others too can benefit from a better understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian culture. It is within the stories told in the mele, and its morals and values, that people can truly be enriched in their personal lives.

Hālau O Keikiali’i hopes to reach people far and wide, touching everyone who may or may not be exposed to the Hawaiian culture and sharing with them in this spirit.
