The Mountains Sing Book Reading with Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai

A sweeping tale of one family’s shifting fortunes in Vietnam across half a century. Quế Mai’s first novel in English centers on the Trần family living in North Vietnam during three conflict-struck generations. Quế Mai will present her newest work in conversation with Thi Bui, 2018 Caldecott Honor winner and Eisner Award finalist for her illustrated memoir, The Best We Could Do.

About Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai

Born in a small village in the North of Việt Nam in 1973, Quế Mai migrated with her family to the Mekong Delta, South of Việt Nam when she was six years old. She is the author of eleven books of fiction, poetry and non-fiction in Vietnamese and English.

About Thi Bui

Thi Bui was born in Vietnam three months before the end of the Vietnam War, and came to the United States in 1978 as part of the “boat people” wave of refugees from Southeast Asia. Her debut graphic memoir, The Best We Could Do, has been selected as UCLA’s Common Book for 2017 among other accolades.
